Prevent Your Cotton Shirts From Shrinking: 3 Important Rules You Need to Stick To

Cotton shirts are one of the most comfortable clothes we own. Their natural fibers feel soft to our skins, making them a nice companion whether we are hanging out with our friends, or going to a business meeting. No wonder they are one of the most popular types of material worn in Malaysia and around the world!

While comfortable, cotton shirts can be quite fragile. The most common problem cotton shirt owners experience are finding out after washing their clothes that it has gone down a size or two. A nice-fitting shirt becomes too tight and uncomfortable, or even too small to put on.

This can be pretty frustrating, especially if you'll need to replace the shirt with a new one. So, what are you going to do to keep your clothes the right size for longer? And what about clothes that have already shrunk? Is there hope for recovery, or are they destined for the bin?

In this article, we’ll help you with the biggest problem of all and also give you some tips on how you can try to recover your shrunken cotton shirts.

Rule #1: Use low heat or no heat only for machine wash

It's no surprise that shirts made from natural fibers like cotton can be particularly sensitive to heat. If you prefer using the washing machine to clear your weekly laundry, be sure to set the temperatures to low or no heat. Better yet, use cold water for washing.

This way, you'll be able to keep your cotton shirts in good condition without risk of shrinking!

Rule #2: Hand wash over machine wash

If you are committed to keeping your cotton clothes in their best condition, consider handwashing them! I know, I know - it's a little old school. But if you happen to find your clothes constantly coming out smaller after having been machine washed, hand washing is your next best alternative.

Even when handwashing your clothes though, you'll need to be careful about keeping the temperature low. Use cold water if you can.

Rule #3: Air dry over tumble dry

If you've followed the rules for washing, you're only halfway done. The last part of taking care of your cotton shirts is drying. While drying with a dryer can be quite convenient, if you want your cotton shirts to last, you’ll need to wait it out and air dry them.

Luckily, that isn’t so hard in Malaysia where it is sunny most of the time. Give your cotton shirts a nice air dry. Be cautious of leaving your shirts out in the sun for too long though, as this may cause them to lose color.

Finally, What to Do with Shrunk Cotton Shirts?

Maybe you've accidentally broken one of the three rules here and have a shrunken clothes in your hands now. Is the situation hopeless?

Not quite.

According to Huffington Post, what you need to do is immerse your shrunken clothes into warm water, add a tablespoon of hair conditioner and start stretching it out. While this sounds like an odd hack, we recommend giving it a go if you want to give your shirt one last chance.

Cotton shirts are casual and comfortable pieces of clothing loved by Malaysians. Though, the natural fibers that cotton shirts are made of can make them vulnerable to shrinking when exposed to high heats during washing and drying.

To keep your cotton shirts from shrinking, we recommend washing with low heats and air drying whenever possible. If you are unfortunate enough to have your clothes shrunk already, fret not! Apply some hair conditioner and warm water to try and stretch out your shirt back to their original sizes.

By following these rules, you'll likely be able to keep your clothes in as pristine condition as possible.
